No matter the
name of the USAF's airlift competition, units based at McChord
have fared very well over the many years since the first
competition named "CARP Rodeo" in 1961. In the second CARP
rodeo, it was the 62d Air Transport Wing taking the top honors
as Overall Champion in 1963.
Since the
resurgence of the Air Force wide airlift competition with the
"Volant Rodeo" in 1979, teams from 62d and 446th Military
Airlift Wings have performed at a high level capturing many
trophies in the C-141 StarLifters and C-130 Hercules. McChord’s
Reserve unit, the 446th MAW has won the C-141 Top Team award
three times since 1979, and in 1986 won all C-141 trophies
awarded in the last "Volant Rodeo". In the first "Air Mobility
Rodeo" 1992, the 446th was name as the top Team in that year's
competition.
At the
twilight of the C-141 era, the 62d Airlift Wing won the C-141
Top Team Trophy in 1998 Rodeo Competition. In the midst of
conversion, the 62d & the 446th sent four teams to the 2000
Rodeo, one each for the C-141 and the C-17. The 2000 rodeo was
the last for Americas long serving airlift backbone, the C-141
StarLifter, the 446th AW would be crowned as the last Top C-141
Team in a USAF Airlift Rodeo.
Since
competing in their first Rodeo in the C-17 in 2000, the 62d &
446th Air Lift Wings have been considered one of the more
formidable foes in Rodeo. Both Wings have captured many of the
rodeo's top awards in their Globemasters, including Top C-17
Team (446th AW) in 2005, and the top award in the competition,
the Top Mobility Team (62d AW) in 2009.
